Former St. John's star RJ Luis has committed to LSU as he hopes to head back to campus after a brief NBA stint, according to multiple reports Tuesday.
The 2025 Big East Player of the Year declared for the 2025 NBA Draft after his junior season but went undrafted.
He signed a two-way contract with the Utah Jazz but was traded in the offseason to the Boston Celtics, who assigned him to their G-League affiliate. The Celtics waived him in November before he actually played a game, with the move coming after he suffered a groin injury that required surgery.
The NCAA previously said players who sign two-way contracts cannot return to play college basketball, so Luis currently is ineligible to play and likely will need to take legal action to request a waiver to get on the court for the Tigers.
If the signing with LSU is approved, Luis has one year of eligibility remaining.
Luis, 23, averaged 18.2 points and 7.2 rebounds in 35 games (32 starts) in his last season at St. John's in 2025.
He also earned Big East Tournament MVP honors that season. However, in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, with St. John's as the No. 2 seed in the West Region, he made just 3 of 17 shots from the floor and sat out the final 4:56 of the second half in a 75-66 setback to No. 10 Arkansas.
Luis, a Miami native, began his college career with one season at Massachusetts before transferring to St. John's prior to the 2023-24 campaign. He averaged 14.1 points and 5.6 rebounds in 85 games over those three seasons.
