GAINESVILLE, Florida: Local police report stopping children, ages 10 and 11, who had driven their family car 200 miles, in an attempt to run away to California.
The children's mother had reported the car stolen and her children missing four hours earlier from North Port in southwest Florida.
After stopping the vehicle and, as required when dealing with car theft, the officers drew their guns and ordered the occupants from the car.
"Much to their surprise, deputies observed a 10-year-old male driver exit the vehicle, along with his 11-year-old sister," the department said in a statement.
The police added that the girl was upset after the mother had taken away her electronic devices for misbehaving, so she and her brother left home and were driving to California.
After being interviewed, police said there was no suggestion that the children had been mistreated by their mother.
The children were later released to the mother.
