SAN JOSE, California: Samsung Electronics will build a $17 billion semiconductor chip factory in Texas, in a bid to increase the supply of chips.
Samsung officials said it found Taylor, Texas to be the most likely site for its chip manufacturing facility, located some 30 miles from its Austin-based production center.
"With greater manufacturing capacity, we will be able to better serve the needs of our customers and contribute to the stability of the global semiconductor supply chain," said Kinam Kim, Vice Chairman and CEO, Samsung Electronics Device Solutions Division.
Officials from the state of Texas and Samsung announced the decision on November 23.
Samsung is opening the Texas chip plant at the same time that Intel and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company are also building factories in the west.
The three companies will build facilities in the west, in response to the unprecedented post-Covid demand for semiconductor chips to operate autos, computers, televisions, personal electronic devices, home appliances, and smartphones.
Samsung currently employs 3,000 people in Texas, and future plans call for hiring an additional 1,800 staff.
