The Indy Lights Series, the top developmental circuit for the IndyCar Series, announced Monday that it would cancel its 2020 season amid the uncertainty surrounding the coronavirus pandemic.
Two junior levels to IndyCar racing will continue to compete on a revamped 2020 schedule. The Indy Pro 2000 Championship and the USF2000 series will resume their schedules July 9-10 at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wis.
"The effects of the global pandemic on businesses, including racing, have been severe," Andersen Promotions owner and CEO Dan Andersen said in a release. "The changes to our overall calendar of races as well as each event weekend's scheduling and the ability for some of our drivers to compete has impacted the Indy Lights series far more harshly than our other two championships."
Indy Lights is expected to return in 2021. It is the first time since 1986 that Indy racing will not run a feeder series directly beneath its premier series.
According to TSOladder.com, the decision to suspend Indy Lights racing for 2020 is not a surprise and that three drivers had already stepped back from their racing programs.
